Android users will soon have a new tool for emergencies with the introduction of Emergency Live Video, a feature that enables users to share live video feeds with 911 responders. This feature aims to enhance support during critical situations by allowing responders to visually assess the scene and provide guidance in real time. For instance, in medical emergencies, 911 operators can direct callers through life-saving procedures like CPR or first aid using the live video stream.
Emergency Live Video proves especially beneficial when individuals are unable to clearly articulate their situation, such as when lost or under extreme stress. To ensure user privacy and consent, the feature requires callers to authorize the sharing of live video. Additionally, the video feed is encrypted by default, and users retain the ability to halt streaming at any point.
Android’s Emergency Live Video feature follows a similar tool, Emergency SOS Live Video, available to iPhone users since 2024. Android’s implementation is being rolled out to prominent safety platforms like RapidSOS, Motorola Solutions, and Prepared911 in the US, initially. To utilize this feature, Android users need a device running Android 8 or later with active Google Play services.
