Apple has unveiled a new feature, Digital IDs, allowing users to create and store an ID in Apple Wallet using their US passport. According to The Verge, this Digital ID will be accepted at TSA checkpoints for domestic travel in over 250 US airports. Although it cannot replace physical passports and is not valid for international travel, the Digital ID offers a convenient alternative for those without digital driver’s licenses or REAL IDs.
The Digital ID creation process involves scanning the passport’s photo page and embedded chip for data authentication, followed by a verification selfie and facial movements confirmation. The encrypted feature ensures user privacy, with Apple unable to access displayed ID data.
Users can present their Digital ID by double-clicking their iPhone’s side or Home button to access Apple Wallet, then selecting the Digital ID for identity reader verification. This innovation expands Apple’s digital wallet capabilities beyond driver’s licenses in select states, providing a streamlined travel document solution.
