Apple has introduced a new feature called Digital ID, allowing iPhone and Apple Watch users in the U.S. to securely store a digital copy of their passport in the Apple Wallet app for use at TSA checkpoints in over 250 domestic airports. This functionality marks a significant advancement in digital identification, streamlining the travel experience for users.
The Digital ID, introduced with the iOS 26 release, enables users to scan their passport photo page and chip for authentication, ensuring a secure and convenient process for adding the digital ID to their Wallet. While the Digital ID does not replace the physical passport and is limited to domestic travel, its integration with Apple’s ecosystem brings iPhones closer to becoming comprehensive digital wallets, offering users a consolidated and efficient way to manage essential information.
Utilizing the Digital ID is user-friendly, similar to using Apple Pay. By authenticating through Face ID or Touch ID and holding the device near an identity reader, users can swiftly present their identification information at TSA checkpoints, enhancing the overall travel experience.
