Apple has announced the release of the second-generation AirTag, featuring upgrades that enhance its tracking functionality and user experience. Priced at $29 for a single unit and $99 for a four-pack, the new AirTag is equipped with the latest Ultra Wideband (U2) chip, previously seen in recent iPhone and Apple Watch models. This chip significantly improves Precision Finding, allowing users to locate their AirTag with up to 1.5 times greater range, complemented by visual, audio, and haptic feedback on compatible Apple devices.
Key improvements include a 50% louder speaker, ensuring the AirTag’s alerts can be heard from twice the distance compared to its predecessor. The enhanced Bluetooth chip also extends the tracker’s overall range. While battery life remains unchanged at ‘more than a year,’ users can easily replace the battery as needed.
Apple’s software requirements mandate that new AirTag owners have an iPhone or iPad running the latest iOS 26 version, along with an Apple Account signed into iCloud. The device’s tracking functionalities are powered by Apple’s Find My feature, leveraging a network of Apple devices for precise location tracking. Additionally, the Share Item Location feature enables collaboration with airlines to track missing items, currently supported by 36 airlines with plans to expand to 50 in the future.
