Over 230 organizations, including Food & Water Watch, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Greenpeace, are urging for a temporary halt on the establishment of additional data centers in the United States. The request is grounded in the necessity for stricter regulations to mitigate the adverse impacts on electricity consumption, water usage, and pollution levels associated with these facilities.
In a letter addressed to Congress, the coalition highlighted the detrimental consequences of the rapid proliferation of data centers driven by the demand for AI and cryptocurrency operations. The uncontrolled expansion is causing disruptions in various communities nationwide, posing threats to the economic, environmental, climate, and water security of American citizens.
