Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has made significant progress in its pursuit of fusion power generation. At CES 2026, the company successfully installed the first magnet in its Sparc fusion reactor, a crucial milestone.
The Sparc reactor aims to harness superheated plasma within a doughnut-like magnetic field to produce energy more efficiently than it consumes. The 18 magnets, each weighing 24 tons and capable of generating a 20 tesla magnetic field, are vital components of the reactor. These magnets will play a crucial role in confining and compressing the plasma, which will be heated to over 100 million degrees Celsius.
To ensure the successful operation of Sparc, CFS is collaborating with Nvidia and Siemens to develop a digital twin of the reactor. This digital replica will aid in fine-tuning the technology before the actual reactor is activated, showcasing the advanced technological methodologies being employed in fusion power research.
