The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has faced criticism for leveraging popular video game franchises like Halo in its social media recruitment efforts for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The latest post from DHS features imagery from Halo, including characters and vehicles from the game, with the caption ‘DESTROY THE FLOOD’ and a link to ICE’s recruitment website, urging individuals to ‘finish this fight.’
This move follows a previous instance where DHS used the Pokémon theme song in a similar recruitment post, drawing parallels between real-world immigration issues and fictional alien species.
When approached for comments, Microsoft chose not to provide a response regarding DHS’s use of the Halo content. The Pokémon Company International had previously distanced itself from the DHS’s use of Pokémon content in a statement to The Daily Beast, clarifying that they were not involved in the creation or distribution of such content.
