Fitbit has introduced its new Gemini-powered health coach, a significant update to its app experience initially announced in August. The new health coach, available in preview starting today for premium US Android subscribers, will expand to iOS later this year, according to Fitbit product manager Taylor Helgren.
Fitbit has reimagined its app around this health coach, offering users an opt-in experience within a redesigned app. While not yet feature-complete, upcoming additions like nutrition and cycle tracking are on the roadmap. Users can seamlessly switch between the new health coach-driven app and the traditional one. The AI coach engages users through a personalized onboarding process, establishing goals and preferences based on user input and historical Fitbit data. It then crafts tailored weekly workout plans, considering factors like available equipment and desired training intensity.
Users can interact with the health coach using natural language to make adjustments and seek advice on health and fitness matters. The AI system keeps track of these conversations in ‘coach’s notes,’ allowing for adjustments in case of injuries or schedule changes. This deep integration of AI recommendations aims to provide meaningful guidance, avoiding generic summaries often associated with AI fitness apps.
Although this AI-centric approach offers extensive benefits, concerns about potential misinterpretations or inaccuracies persist, especially in critical situations.
