Epic Games’ popular battle royale game, Fortnite, has made a comeback on the U.S. Google Play Store following a legal dispute that had significant implications for the tech and gaming industries.
The return of Fortnite to the Google Play Store comes after a court decision that marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing clash between app developers and platform owners over in-app purchase regulations and revenue sharing.
In a five-year legal battle, Epic Games settled with Google but faced setbacks in its lawsuit against Apple, which centered on in-app payment structures. The tech giants had removed Fortnite from their app stores after Epic Games attempted to bypass their payment systems in 2020, sparking antitrust lawsuits.
While the court did not deem Apple a monopolist, it instructed the company to permit developers to include links to alternative payment methods. However, an appeals court partially overturned some of these mandates, allowing Apple to regulate the prominence of external payment links and levy fees on purchases outside its App Store.
