Google has introduced a new desktop mode feature for its Pixel phones and tablets, as part of the recent March Pixel update. This functionality allows users with a Pixel 8 or newer device to connect to an external monitor via USB-C, enabling a desktop-like multi-window experience. With this feature, users can seamlessly utilize a mouse and keyboard for enhanced productivity.
The desktop mode is also compatible with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold devices. Additionally, the Pixel Tablet is receiving a desktop windowing feature, providing users with a familiar interface to organize and resize overlapping windows efficiently.
While Google has not released visual representations of these new capabilities, the company has been exploring a desktop experience for Android. Collaborating with Samsung on expanding Samsung’s DeX feature, Google aims to offer users a seamless transition to a desktop environment when connecting their devices to larger displays. Testing of these features began for Pixel 8 and above users in June, following the initial announcement last year.
