Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis expressed caution about OpenAI’s decision to introduce ads within its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. In an interview with Axios at Davos, Hassabis noted that while ads have been crucial for funding much of the consumer internet, their integration into AI assistants like chatbots raises questions about trust and user experience.
Hassabis emphasized the importance of maintaining user trust in AI assistants that are meant to be helpful and work for the individual. He stated that Google currently has no plans to introduce ads in its own AI chatbot, opting to observe user responses and behavior before making any decisions in that direction.
Contrary to OpenAI’s move, Hassabis said Google is carefully considering the idea of monetizing AI services through ads, without feeling pressured to rush into such a decision.
