Google is now providing select users the option to modify their Gmail email addresses, as reported by The Verge. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals who have outdated or unprofessional email handles created during their youth, such as LazySexyCool3030.
While the change does not entirely replace the original address, it functions more like adding a secondary address to the account. Messages sent to the old address will still be delivered to the inbox, and the old address can still be used to log in to associated accounts, serving as an alias for the new address. All data linked to the old address, including emails, photos, and files, will be retained.
However, there are limitations to this service. Users can only alter their email address once per year and can create a maximum of three new addresses. It is possible to switch back to the original email at any time. Some complications may arise with settings and files when making the change on ChromeOS, underscoring the importance of performing a full system backup beforehand.
This update is particularly advantageous for individuals who acquired their Gmail addresses at a young age and may now desire a more mature or professional email identity. Additionally, those who have undergone a name change will also benefit from this feature.
The new support page is currently available only in Hindi, and the option to change Gmail addresses has not been universally accessible to The Verge staff members. According to 9to5Google, the feature is being gradually rolled out to all users. Queries to Google for verification are pending.
