Google has launched a new pilot program to test AI-generated article summaries on select publications’ Google News pages. The search giant recently announced this initiative, with news outlets like Der Spiegel, El País, The Guardian, and others participating.
The goal of this commercial partnership is to explore how AI can enhance user engagement, as stated in a blog post by Google. Through this pilot, the company will collaborate with publishers to introduce new features on Google News, including AI-powered article summaries. These summaries aim to provide users with context before they decide to click on an article.
While there is a possibility that AI summaries could reduce the number of clicks on news articles, participating publishers will receive direct payments from Google as compensation, potentially offsetting any decrease in site traffic. The AI-generated article summaries will be exclusive to the Google News pages of participating publications and will not appear elsewhere on Google News or Search.
Google had previously introduced AI summaries for news in Discover, the news feed within the Google search app. Additionally, the company is also experimenting with audio briefings for users who prefer listening to news content.
