Google’s latest Pixel 10 smartphones have introduced a new feature that allows users to share files directly with Apple’s AirDrop, bridging the gap between Android and iOS devices. This peer-to-peer connection ensures data security by avoiding routing information through a server, which could lead to data logging and additional sharing. To enable this cross-compatibility, iPhone users need to temporarily switch AirDrop to ‘Everyone for 10 Minutes’ mode. The sharing function is bidirectional, allowing iPhone owners to send files back to Pixel 10 phones as well.
Google stated that this achievement was independent of Apple’s involvement, showcasing their commitment to providing a seamless and secure file-sharing experience. The underlying technology behind this innovation leverages the memory-safe Rust programming language, combining comprehensive safety measures on both platforms. Google’s emphasis on security is further validated by a third-party penetration testing firm, NetSPI, which deemed the interoperability notably stronger than other industry implementations.
Although currently exclusive to Pixel 10 devices, Google plans to expand this feature to a wider user base in the future, offering a glimpse into a more connected ecosystem for mobile users.
