Google has announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a new open standard designed to enhance AI agent-based shopping experiences. Developed in collaboration with industry leaders like Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart, UCP aims to streamline various stages of the customer buying journey, from product discovery to post-purchase assistance.
Building on previous agentic protocols like Agent Payments Protocol (A2P) and Agent2Agent (A2A), UCP offers businesses flexibility to tailor their AI interactions to specific requirements. Google plans to implement UCP in AI-enabled product listings, allowing users to complete purchases directly from U.S. retailers using Google Pay and PayPal.
Shopify’s CEO, Tobi Lutke, highlighted the potential of agentic shopping to match users with personalized product recommendations. Shopify has also partnered with Microsoft Copilot to enhance conversational shopping experiences.
Additionally, Google will now enable brands to provide exclusive discounts to users during AI-driven product searches, further improving the overall shopping experience. This development reflects the growing trend of integrating AI technologies to streamline e-commerce operations and enhance customer engagement.
