Google has officially announced the upcoming merger of its Android and Chromebook platforms, paving the way for a new desktop operating system known as Aluminium OS. The tech company aims to blend the strengths of ChromeOS and Android to create a seamless user experience across devices.
Aluminium OS is the culmination of Google’s efforts to enhance interoperability between ChromeOS and Android. This development comes after years of speculation following the Pixel Slate’s launch in 2018, which initially attempted to integrate the two platforms. The new operating system promises to bring Android functionalities to the PC market, marking a significant shift in Google’s product strategy.
At events like Google I/O 2025 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, key Google executives, including Rick Osterloh and Sameer Samat, shared insights into the upcoming merger. Osterloh emphasized the collaboration with Qualcomm to power Aluminium OS, leveraging the chipmaker’s expertise in mobile and laptop technologies.
With this merger, Google aims to create a unified ecosystem that seamlessly integrates mobile and desktop computing experiences. While Apple has maintained a distinction between macOS and iPadOS, Google’s move towards Aluminium OS signals a new era of convergence in the tech industry.
