Apple’s AirPods have long been favored by iPhone users for their seamless integration, but now, thanks to the free LibrePods app developed by Kavish Devar, Android and Linux users can also enjoy enhanced features typically exclusive to Apple devices.
LibrePods leverages reverse engineering of AirPods’ proprietary protocols to enable functionalities like ear detection, head gestures, conversational awareness, battery level accuracy, and more on non-Apple platforms. This app even supports customizations such as accessibility settings, headphone renaming, and multi-device connectivity.
While LibrePods promises extensive customization options for all AirPods models, certain features like heart rate monitoring on AirPods Pro 3 are not yet supported. Users of OnePlus or Oppo devices running ColorOS or OxygenOS 16 can access LibrePods without rooting, albeit with limitations on features like transparency mode customization.
Devar notes that LibrePods’ installation on Android devices currently requires rooted phones with the Xposed framework due to a bug in the Android Bluetooth stack. Despite this limitation, the app opens up a new realm of possibilities for Android and Linux users seeking to maximize their AirPods experience.
