Meta, the tech company, has recently signed agreements with three nuclear power providers to ensure a stable and significant electricity supply for its AI data centers. These deals with TerraPower, Oklo, and Vistra are set to provide a massive 6.6 gigawatts of energy by 2035, equivalent to powering a country like Ireland.
The primary focus of these partnerships is to support Meta’s AI projects, notably Prometheus, a cutting-edge supercluster computing system scheduled to launch in New Albany, Ohio, later this year. Meta is actively investing in the construction of new nuclear reactors as part of these collaborations, with the first reactor potentially operational as early as 2030. This strategic move aligns with Meta’s objective of powering its AI operations with nuclear energy, supplementing a previous deal with Constellation to revitalize an aging nuclear plant.
While specific financial details remain undisclosed, Meta has committed to covering the entire energy costs for its data centers, alleviating the burden on consumers. The company’s chief global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan, emphasized the significance of these agreements, positioning Meta as a major player in corporate nuclear energy procurement in the U.S. He highlighted the critical role of advanced data centers and AI infrastructure in reinforcing America’s global AI leadership.
