Microsoft has announced plans to address long-standing user complaints about the Windows Update process. While not eliminating automatic updates entirely, Windows users will soon have the ability to pause updates indefinitely, allowing for more control over when to install them. This change comes as part of Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing the user experience with Windows 11.
According to Windows boss Pavan Davuluri, users will no longer be forced to install updates immediately. Instead, they can choose to reboot or shut down their computers without the updates being automatically applied. Additionally, Microsoft promises that even if updates are not paused, users will only need to reboot their computers once a month.
Furthermore, Microsoft aims to improve the performance, responsiveness, and stability of Windows 11 through upcoming updates. These enhancements include reducing memory consumption, speeding up the launch and operation of apps like File Explorer, minimizing crashes, enhancing drivers, and ensuring more reliable device wake-ups.
In response to feedback regarding lengthy setup processes, Microsoft plans to streamline the initial device setup experience. Users will have the option to skip updates during setup to expedite reaching the desktop. Moreover, setup procedures will involve fewer pages and reboots, simplifying the onboarding process. Notably, Microsoft will introduce the ability to use gamepad controls for creating a PIN during setup, catering to user convenience.
