The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has raised concerns over Meta’s use of the ‘PG-13’ label in its content restrictions, citing differences in their respective rating systems. According to a report by TechCrunch, Meta recently announced that content on teen Instagram accounts would align with PG-13 movie ratings by default, prompting the MPA to issue a cease-and-desist letter to Meta.
The MPA emphasized that its movie-rating system cannot be equated to Meta’s content moderation mechanisms, which reportedly heavily rely on artificial intelligence algorithms. The MPA’s letter expressed concerns that Meta’s association of PG-13 guidelines with its platform could mislead the public and undermine trust in the MPA’s established rating system.
In response, Meta clarified that it did not claim MPA certification or official PG-13 ratings for its teen accounts. The company explained that while its content restrictions are influenced by PG-13 principles, they are not directly endorsed by the MPA. Meta also defended its use of the term ‘PG-13’ as falling within fair use guidelines.
