The first bill, known as the New York Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Requirements in News Act (NY FAIR News Act), proposes mandatory labels on AI-generated content in news media. It would also require human editorial review and approval for any content created using AI, ensuring oversight in the news production process.
The NY FAIR News Act aims to enhance transparency within news organizations regarding the use of AI, requiring disclosure to employees about the methods and instances of AI integration. Additionally, the bill emphasizes the implementation of safeguards to protect sensitive information, particularly data concerning sources, from AI access.
The second bill, S9144, introduces a three-year pause on the construction of new data centers in New York. This is in response to the escalating demand for electricity and gas, driven partly by the rapid proliferation of data centers in the state. With an anticipated addition of at least 10 gigawatts of demand over the next five years, concerns about rising utility costs and strain on the power grid have prompted regulatory action.
These proposed bills reflect New York’s proactive approach to regulating AI applications and managing the growth of data infrastructure, addressing potential challenges arising from technological advancements.
