OpenAI has reported a significant increase in the number of child exploitation incident reports it sent to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. According to a recent update from the company, OpenAI’s reports to NCMEC increased by 80 times year over year. NCMEC’s CyberTipline, a platform dedicated to reporting child sexual abuse material and other forms of child exploitation, plays a crucial role in handling these reports.
It’s important to note that the rise in reports does not necessarily indicate a direct correlation to increased nefarious activities. Such increases can sometimes be attributed to modifications in automated moderation systems or reporting criteria on platforms. OpenAI’s proactive approach to disclosure involves reporting not only the number of incidents but also the total pieces of content they pertain to, providing a comprehensive view of the situation.
OpenAI spokesperson Gaby Raila stated that the company had made strategic investments to enhance its capacity for reviewing and addressing reports amidst user growth and the introduction of new product features. The rise in reports coincided with the expansion of product functionalities, including image uploads, and the growing popularity of OpenAI’s offerings. In a related development, Nick Turley, vice president and head of ChatGPT, announced a substantial increase in the app’s weekly active users compared to the previous year.
