OpenAI has disbanded a team dedicated to ensuring its AI systems are safe, trustworthy, and aligned with human values. The team’s former leader has transitioned to the role of Chief Futurist within the company, while other team members have been reassigned to different positions.
The now-dissolved team, established in 2024, was focused on alignment research, aiming to make AI systems follow human intent across various scenarios. OpenAI emphasized the importance of AI acting in line with human interests, avoiding harmful behavior, and remaining controllable and auditable.
Josh Achiam, the former head of the disbanded team, shared in a blog post his new responsibilities as Chief Futurist, focusing on studying the impact of AI and artificial general intelligence on the world. This move showcases OpenAI’s commitment to understanding the implications of advanced AI technologies on society and the future.
