Samsung Display and Intel have collaborated on a new laptop technology called SmartPower HDR, aimed at enhancing battery efficiency when viewing HDR content on OLED screens. The technology, showcased by Intel last year, is now being detailed by Samsung Display, highlighting its power-saving capabilities.
Traditional HDR modes often lead to high power consumption due to locked maximum brightness levels, even during standard activities like web browsing. This results in many laptops defaulting to SDR mode, despite HDR’s color and brightness advantages.
SmartPower HDR™ addresses this issue by reducing OLED pixel emission power consumption by up to 22% in typical usage and up to 17% during HDR content consumption. Notably, power consumption in general scenarios is now comparable to SDR mode, offering a more balanced approach to power management.
