Shure has unveiled an updated version of its MV88 microphone, now featuring a USB-C connector for direct compatibility with smartphones, as reported by The Verge. The original MV88, launched in 2015 with a Lightning connector, has been modernized to align with current technology standards. Unlike the previous MV88+, which required a cable connection, the new MV88 USB-C seamlessly mounts onto phones and tablets.
The MV88 USB-C boasts a condenser microphone with versatile polar pattern options, including stereo, mono cardioid, mono bidirectional, and raw mid-side. To enhance the user experience, Shure offers dedicated apps such as MOTIV Video, MOTIV Audio (for mobile), and MOTIV Mix (for desktop) that provide presets and manual controls for gain, a five-band EQ, limiter, compressor, and high-pass filter for precise sound adjustments.
For effortless content creation, users can simply plug the MV88 USB-C into their smartphones, activate the Auto Level Mode and Real-time Denoiser, and commence vlogging or livestreaming with minimal setup. Additionally, the microphone’s included foam windscreen ensures clear audio capture in various environments, even amidst noisy surroundings.
The MV88 is competitively priced at $159, positioning it alongside wireless lav microphones like those from Rode. While wireless lavs may be preferable for solo vlogging, the MV88 shines in scenarios where capturing ambient sounds or multiple subjects simultaneously is essential.
