Spotify is taking steps to address the issue of misattributed AI-generated music by testing a new tool called ‘Artist Profile Protection.’ This feature allows artists to review and approve releases before they appear on their profiles, giving them more control over their music presence on the platform.
According to a blog post by Spotify, the rise of AI-generated tracks has led to music being incorrectly associated with artists on streaming services. To address this, Spotify aims to prioritize artist identity protection and ensure that only approved releases are linked to their profiles, impacting their stats and recommendations positively.
The beta version of the tool empowers artists to curate their content, approving only the music they want visible to users. This move comes shortly after Sony Music took action against over 135,000 AI-generated songs impersonating its artists on various streaming platforms.
Spotify acknowledges that while open distribution channels have empowered independent artists, they have also made room for errors and malicious activities. Misplacements due to metadata inaccuracies, name similarities, or deliberate attempts to misattribute music can significantly affect artists’ catalogs and audience engagement.
The ‘Artist Profile Protection’ tool aims to address artists’ requests for more transparency and control over their music listings, offering a solution to a persistent challenge in the streaming industry.
