T-Mobile is set to launch a new AI-driven feature that will enable live translation of phone calls into over 50 languages, as reported by The Verge. This Live Translation functionality will be available in beta starting this spring, allowing eligible T-Mobile customers to register for the service. The feature aims to address communication barriers by providing real-time translation directly within the network, eliminating the need for additional apps or devices.
T-Mobile’s CEO stated, “Some of the biggest barriers wireless customers face are the simplest ones – like being able to understand each other.” By integrating AI into their network infrastructure, T-Mobile seeks to enhance connectivity and foster a sense of community through seamless communication.
Unlike traditional translation services that require specific software, T-Mobile’s Live Translation can be initiated by any T-Mobile network user during a call. This feature will be accessible on T-Mobile’s 5G Advanced network, with compatibility extended to 4G LTE as well. T-Mobile’s President of Technology and CTO emphasized the importance of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) for ensuring reliable service across various devices and network conditions.
Beta participants will have the opportunity to activate Live Translation at no extra cost by dialing 87, with plans for voice activation using “Hey T-Mobile” expected later this spring. Notably, the translation service operates solely during active calls and does not retain call recordings or transcripts.
