OpenAI, Anthropic, and Block, prominent American AI companies, have joined forces to establish the Agentic AI Foundation. This collaborative effort aims to define open standards for artificial intelligence agents, creating a framework for building agentic software and tools that can interact seamlessly across platforms.
The foundation will take ownership of key technologies such as Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), OpenAI’s Agents.md, and Block’s Goose framework. By making these technologies open source under the foundation, developers can now contribute to their enhancement, fostering a more inclusive ecosystem for agentic AI development.
Nick Cooper from OpenAI emphasizes the importance of standardization through MCP, enabling better integration among different AI systems. The move towards open interoperability is expected to drive industry-wide adoption of agentic AI, facilitating cross-platform communication and collaboration.
Supported by the Linux Foundation, known for its stewardship of open source projects like Linux, the Agentic AI Foundation has garnered support from tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, AWS, Bloomberg, and Cloudflare. This collaborative initiative signifies a transition from chat-based AI to more action-oriented AI agents, offering a glimpse into a future where AI systems engage in transactions and user interactions autonomously.
