In a recent interview at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025, Waymo’s co-CEO, Tekedra Mawakana, emphasized the importance of scaling operations for the autonomous vehicle company. Mawakana highlighted the critical need to expand Waymo’s services to enhance road safety through increased scale.
Waymo’s strategic growth plans include launching operations in several new U.S. cities such as D.C., Miami, Denver, Dallas, Seattle, and Nashville, with London on the horizon for 2026. The company aims to offer 1 million trips per week by the end of 2026, showcasing its ambitious expansion targets.
Mawakana also addressed the safety challenges associated with scaling autonomous vehicle operations. She asserted that Waymo’s vehicles operate at a higher safety level than human drivers, and criticized competitors for not being transparent about their technology’s safety standards. Emphasizing the importance of transparency in the industry, Mawakana underlined the necessity for companies to earn the trust required to make roads safer.
Despite ongoing efforts to enhance safety, Waymo faced scrutiny following an incident in Atlanta, Georgia, where one of its vehicles was involved in a traffic incident. The company, however, remains committed to improving safety standards and has released a report indicating that its vehicles are significantly safer than human drivers.
