Spotify has announced an update to its shuffle feature, aimed at providing users with a more diverse listening experience. The music streaming service is rolling out a new default shuffle option that reduces the number of previously played songs in the queue, allowing for a greater variety of music.
Initially introduced as Smart Shuffle for paid users in 2023, this feature automatically added new songs to playlists based on users’ listening history and preferences, with no option to disable it. However, with the latest update, Spotify is making the shuffle with fewer repeats the default setting for paid users, ensuring they encounter fewer familiar tracks and more fresh content.
Users who prefer the original Smart Shuffle can still access it by navigating to Settings > Playback and selecting the ‘Standard’ option under Shuffle Mode. Additionally, both free and premium users now have the ability to select any song to play next while shuffling without altering the queue order.
Spotify’s product director for personalization, Lauren Saunders, explained that the new shuffle algorithm aims to enhance randomness in song selection, reducing the likelihood of repetitive listening experiences. Saunders highlighted the importance of true randomness in shuffle functionality, acknowledging that pure randomness can sometimes lead to perceived patterns that may not align with user expectations.
