Spotify has made a strategic move in the music industry by acquiring WhoSampled, the popular music database, as reported by TechCrunch. This acquisition aims to power Spotify’s new SongDNA feature, enhancing music discovery for its users.
WhoSampled, founded in 2008 and based in London, provides an extensive database of songs, samples, covers, remixes, and artists. With over 1.2 million songs and nearly 622,000 samples tracked, WhoSampled’s rich data will now fuel Spotify’s latest features, including SongDNA.
Notably, Spotify had prior interactions with WhoSampled, having collaborated in 2016 to enable Spotify users to access their playlists and saved tracks within the WhoSampled app. Post-acquisition, WhoSampled assures its users that the platform and brand will continue to operate independently, promising enhancements such as faster submission moderation, ad removal, and free mobile app downloads with subscriptions.
The shared vision between Spotify and WhoSampled on the significance of musical context and deepening listener engagement solidified this acquisition. By integrating WhoSampled’s capabilities, Spotify aims to offer users a more immersive music experience, aligning with its commitment to enhancing music discovery and exploration.
