Google is ramping up its efforts to combat digital fraud in India by introducing enhanced AI-powered scam detection features, specifically tailored for Pixel 9 devices and financial apps, as reported by TechCrunch. With the surge in online activities and transactions in India, the need for robust fraud protection mechanisms has become increasingly critical.
According to the Reserve Bank of India, digital transaction fraud constituted over half of all reported bank fraud cases in 2024, resulting in substantial financial losses. The Ministry of Home Affairs disclosed that online scams alone led to approximately ₹70 billion in losses during the initial months of 2025.
Google’s latest initiative involves deploying on-device scam detection capabilities using Gemini Nano technology to analyze calls in real-time, identifying potential fraud patterns without compromising user privacy. This feature, which was initially launched for English-speaking Pixel 9 users in the U.S., will now be extended to the Indian market to strengthen consumer protection.
While Google’s on-device scam detection is a step in the right direction, its current limitations, such as availability exclusively on Pixel 9 and later models and support for English language only, may hinder its widespread adoption in a market dominated by non-English-speaking users. As India continues to witness a surge in smartphone usage, initiatives like these underscore the importance of tech companies adapting their solutions to cater to diverse linguistic preferences.
