A startup named Operation Bluebird has taken steps to reclaim the trademarks of Twitter for a new social network, according to reports from Ars Technica and Reuters. The company recently submitted a petition to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to challenge X Corp.’s ownership of the ‘Twitter’ and ‘Tweet’ trademarks, alleging that these marks have been abandoned by the Elon Musk-owned company.
Operation Bluebird, led by founder Michael Peroff and trademark attorney Stephen Coates, who previously worked at Twitter, aims to introduce a revamped social media platform under the name Twitter.new. Coates stated that the platform would offer familiar features with enhanced safety measures and user control over content interaction. Notably, the startup plans to leverage AI for fact-checking and content moderation.
The petition by Operation Bluebird asserts that X Corp. has relinquished its rights to the Twitter brand due to extended non-use and accuses it of misleading declarations to the USPTO. US trademark regulations stipulate that the abandonment of a mark can be claimed if it remains inactive for three consecutive years without intent for revival.
Since Musk’s rebranding of Twitter to ‘X’ in 2022, the platform has undergone significant changes, prompting Operation Bluebird’s initiative to repurpose the original branding for a new social network experience.
