Disney has taken legal action against Google, alleging ‘massive’ copyright infringement through the unauthorized distribution of its iconic characters using AI technology. According to Variety, Disney claims that Google has utilized AI models to reproduce and distribute images and videos of Disney characters without permission.
The cease-and-desist letter from Disney describes Google as a platform capable of distributing copyrighted Disney characters without authorization. Moreover, the letter accuses Google of falsely branding the generated content with its Gemini logo, misleadingly suggesting Disney’s endorsement.
The affected characters include popular ones from movies like ‘Frozen,’ ‘The Lion King,’ ‘Moana,’ and ‘The Little Mermaid,’ among others. Despite the allegations, Google has not responded to inquiries from TechCrunch regarding the issue.
This development coincides with Disney’s recent partnership with OpenAI, involving a substantial deal to integrate its characters into the Sora AI video generator. The clash between Disney and Google underscores the growing importance of copyright protection in the digital age, especially concerning AI-driven content creation and distribution.
