Caterpillar, a leading manufacturer of construction equipment, has partnered with semiconductor giant Nvidia to integrate AI and automation into its products. The company is currently testing an AI-powered assistive system called ‘Cat AI’ in its Cat 306 CR Mini Excavator, developed on Nvidia’s Jetson Thor physical AI platform.
The innovative Cat AI system comprises a fleet of AI agents that can assist operators by providing real-time information, accessing resources, offering safety recommendations, and scheduling services. According to Brandon Hootman, Caterpillar’s Vice President of Data and AI, this technology will enable the company to deliver valuable insights to customers working in challenging environments.
Caterpillar is also exploring the use of digital twins of construction sites through Nvidia’s Omniverse library to optimize scheduling and resource planning. This strategic move towards automation aligns with the company’s goal of introducing more autonomous solutions across its product portfolio, following the successful deployment of fully autonomous vehicles in the mining sector.
