Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, has announced the launch of its latest satellite internet technology, the TeraWave network, as reported by The Verge. Promising groundbreaking bandwidth capabilities of up to 6 terabits per second for both upload and download speeds, TeraWave aims to revolutionize global connectivity.
Unlike competitors like SpaceX’s Starlink and Amazon’s Leo satellite internet network, Blue Origin’s TeraWave is strategically tailored for enterprise customers, focusing on providing reliable connectivity for critical operations. The network will consist of 5,408 optically-connected satellites, with a unique ‘multi-orbit’ design that includes both low-Earth and medium-Earth orbit satellites.
While traditional wireless connections offer high-speed connectivity of up to 144 gigabits per second, the 128 satellites in medium-Earth orbit have the potential to deliver bidirectional 6 terabit connections, setting a new benchmark in satellite internet technology.
Although TeraWave’s initial customer target is limited to around 100,000 users, primarily in the enterprise, data center, and government sectors, the network’s capabilities signify a significant advancement in the evolution of satellite internet services. Amazon’s parallel efforts with Leo Ultra antennas and Starlink’s pursuit of gigabit speeds further indicate the growing competition in the satellite internet market.
