In the realm of AI chatbots, Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia created by Elon Musk, is gaining prominence as a source of information. ChatGPT is not the only AI tool tapping into Grokipedia; Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini are also starting to cite this resource. The increased usage of Grokipedia is raising concerns about the accuracy and potential misinformation in responses provided by these AI systems.
Despite being a relatively new player, Grokipedia is making its mark. Testing by Ahrefs revealed that ChatGPT referenced Grokipedia in over 263,000 responses out of 13.6 million prompts, citing approximately 95,000 unique Grokipedia pages. While it still lags behind English-language Wikipedia, the growth trajectory is noteworthy.
Researcher Sartaj Rajpal noted that Grokipedia’s share of ChatGPT citations has been steadily increasing, signaling a rising trend since mid-November. Semrush data also indicates a surge in Grokipedia citations in AI answers, although it remains a secondary source compared to established platforms like Wikipedia.
Analysts tracking Grokipedia citations find that ChatGPT leads in utilizing this resource, followed by Google’s AI products. The integration of Grokipedia into these AI systems underscores the evolving landscape of AI-driven information retrieval and the challenges related to ensuring accuracy and reliability.
