Firefox is set to give users more control over AI features within the browser. Mozilla announced that starting with Firefox 148, users will have the ability to block all current and future AI features in the browser. This move comes in response to diverse user preferences regarding AI on the web.
With the upcoming update on February 24, a dedicated AI controls section will be integrated into the browser settings. Users can opt to activate the ‘Block AI enhancements’ toggle to avoid prompts related to AI features. Additionally, individuals can selectively disable specific AI functionalities while retaining others.
The new AI controls will enable users to personalize their browsing experience by managing features like Translations, Alt text in PDFs, AI-enhanced tab grouping, link previews, and the AI chatbot in the sidebar, supporting services such as Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral.
Mozilla’s decision aligns with its commitment to offering users choice and comes after the appointment of Anthony Enzor-DeMeo as Mozilla’s CEO. Enzor-DeMeo emphasized the importance of AI being an opt-in feature, ensuring transparency and value for users. This strategic shift reflects Mozilla’s focus on adapting to the evolving browser landscape while considering user preferences and privacy concerns.
