Google is set to broaden AirDrop support beyond Pixel devices to include a wider range of Android phones, as confirmed by Eric Kay, vice president of engineering for Android. The initiative, known as Quick Share, will allow more Android devices to seamlessly initiate AirDrop sessions with Apple devices in the near future.
Kay emphasized the compatibility efforts with not only iPhones but also iPads and MacBooks. This expansion marks a significant step towards enhancing interoperability between different ecosystems.
While the specific Android partners and devices for this update have not been disclosed, both Nothing and Qualcomm have hinted at forthcoming support. Moreover, Google is working on streamlining the data transfer process for iOS users migrating to Android, addressing concerns such as incomplete transfers and message loss.
Apple has been concurrently developing user-friendly data transfer mechanisms since 2024, and recent collaborative testing between Google and Apple on Android Canary 2512 for Pixel devices showcases ongoing progress in this area.
Kay also highlighted Google’s commitment to facilitating seamless data transfer for users transitioning between platforms, ensuring a smooth migration experience. These efforts underscore the industry’s focus on enhancing user convenience and interoperability in the mobile ecosystem.
