Crypto.com founder Kris Marszalek has acquired the AI.com domain for a record-breaking $70 million, paid entirely in cryptocurrency. This move, as reported by the Financial Times, not only sets a new benchmark in domain transactions but also underscores the tech industry’s growing focus on AI technologies.
Marszalek’s strategic purchase comes just ahead of the Super Bowl, where he plans to unveil the site featuring a personal AI agent for various functions like messaging, app usage, and stock trading. In an interview with the FT, Marszalek emphasized the long-term impact of AI, describing it as ‘one of the greatest technological waves of our lifetime’.
While the crypto industry is known for high spending, this acquisition surpasses previous domain sale records, eclipsing past deals like CarInsurance.com ($49.7 million), VacationRentals.com ($35 million), and Voice.com ($30 million). Broker Larry Fischer highlighted the uniqueness of premium domains like AI.com, suggesting that such opportunities are rare and valuable.
The question of whether these multi-million dollar domain investments yield substantial returns remains uncertain. However, for Marszalek, who already owns the valuable Crypto.com domain and has invested heavily in branding with a $700 million stadium naming deal, acquiring category-defining domains like AI.com appears to be a strategic move.
