Robert Playter, the CEO of Boston Dynamics, has announced his immediate resignation, marking a significant leadership change in the robotics industry. Playter’s departure comes after a transformative tenure that saw Boston Dynamics evolve under his guidance following its acquisition by Hyundai in 2021. During his leadership, the company reached notable milestones, including the launch of an all-electric version of the humanoid Atlas robot in 2024.
Recently, Boston Dynamics showcased the capabilities of its research Atlas robots, demonstrating advanced maneuvers such as tumbling passes and outdoor runs as the company prepares to deploy more sophisticated versions for commercial use. The firm has revealed plans to integrate Atlas robots into Hyundai’s car plants by 2028, amid growing competition in the robotics and AI industries.
Playter, who has been with Boston Dynamics for over three decades and assumed the CEO position in 2020, leaves behind a legacy of innovation within the company. As Playter transitions out, the current CFO, Amanda McMaster, will step in as interim CEO while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement.
In his parting statement, Playter expressed gratitude for his time at Boston Dynamics, acknowledging the company’s evolution from a research lab to a global leader in mobile robotics. His contributions, from pioneering hopping robots to advancing humanoid technology, have solidified Boston Dynamics’ position in the industry.
