Lamborghini, known for its high-performance supercars, has made a significant decision to pivot from full electric cars to plug-in hybrid models. This strategic shift comes as the company’s CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, expressed concerns over the diminishing demand for high-end full electric vehicles globally. Despite being prepared for electric car production, Lamborghini has decided to focus on plug-in hybrids due to the current market realities.
In 2023, Lamborghini had unveiled the Lanzador, a 1,341-horsepower ‘Ultra GT’ that was intended to be the brand’s most powerful car ever. However, the company has confirmed the cancellation of the electric model, following a trend seen among other luxury automakers.
Winkelmann has stated that all future Lamborghini models by the end of the decade will be hybrids, with the first hybrid expected to launch in 2029. This move marks a departure from the initial plan of introducing two full electric models.
The decision to scrap the electric Lanzador, which was a fully functional vehicle with advanced design elements, underscores the challenges faced by luxury automakers in embracing full electric technology amidst evolving market dynamics. Lamborghini’s shift towards plug-in hybrids reflects a pragmatic response to the current consumer preferences and industry trends.
