Russian authorities have apprehended the alleged administrator of LeakBase, a prominent cybercrime forum known for facilitating the exchange of hacking tools and stolen data. This arrest, reported by the state-owned news agency TASS, marks a significant development in the ongoing battle against cybercrime.
LeakBase gained notoriety as one of the leading online platforms for cybercriminals to share illicit resources. Following collaborative efforts by U.S. authorities and Europol, LeakBase’s official website was recently dismantled, and its extensive database, comprising over 142,000 members and 215,000 messages, was seized.
The individual detained, residing in Taganrog, Russia, is believed to be the mastermind behind LeakBase, although their identity remains undisclosed. The U.S. Department of Justice underscored LeakBase’s repository of breached databases, housing a trove of sensitive data such as usernames, passwords, financial details, and credit card information.
The coordinated international operation against LeakBase involved law enforcement agencies across 14 countries, culminating in a series of search warrants, arrests, and interrogations. Europol has clarified that they were not involved in the arrest, emphasizing a lack of collaboration with Russian authorities.
