Google announced in April 2026 a new set of AI-powered features coming to Google TV, including generative image and video tools powered by Gemini, along with a dedicated YouTube Shorts row on the home screen.
At the center of the update is a “Create” button within the Gemini tab, giving users access to two generative AI tools: Nano Banana and Veo. Nano Banana lets users transform photos through voice prompts — swapping outfits, changing backgrounds, or generating new scenes entirely. Veo allows users to create short video clips from scratch or animate still images by describing a scenario. Google is positioning these tools as a shared living-room experience, with example prompts like asking the AI to make “my grandfather moonwalk in space.” The features are rolling out first on Gemini-enabled TCL TVs in the U.S., with broader device support expected later.
Google Photos on Google TV is also receiving updates. Gemini-powered search allows users to find specific memories — such as vacations or birthday parties — without scrolling through an entire library. A new “Remix” feature lets users apply artistic styles like watercolor or oil painting to photos, while “Dynamic Slideshows” introduces animated layouts, frames, and color treatments that can turn any Google Photos collection into a TV-ready slideshow via screensaver settings.
Separately, a new “Short videos for you” row will appear on the Google TV home screen, starting with YouTube Shorts content. Google has indicated this could expand to other platforms in the future. The addition comes after YouTube recently introduced an option to hide Shorts on mobile, suggesting mixed demand for the format. Instagram also expanded its TV app to Google TV devices in the U.S. earlier in 2026.
The updates extend Gemini’s reach beyond phones and tablets into the living room, potentially changing how households interact with photos, videos, and AI tools on a shared screen.
