Amazon announced “Alexa for Shopping” on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 — a personalized AI shopping assistant built into the Amazon search bar and powered by Alexa+. The new tool replaces Rufus, Amazon’s generative AI shopping assistant that launched in 2024.
Available now to U.S. customers, Alexa for Shopping works across mobile, desktop, and Echo Show smart displays, supporting both voice and touch input. Users can type questions directly into the main search bar or a dedicated chat window. The assistant draws on a customer’s purchase history, habits, and preferences to deliver tailored recommendations and custom shopping guides — answering queries ranging from “What’s a good skincare routine for men?” to “When did I last order AA batteries?”
Where Rufus focused on product discovery and comparison, Alexa for Shopping is designed to automate more of the shopping process. It can compare products, track prices, schedule recurring orders for everyday essentials, and add items to a cart automatically when a price threshold is met. Users can instruct the assistant to, for example, “Add this sunscreen to my cart if the price drops to $10.”
The assistant also reaches beyond Amazon’s own marketplace. Using a “Buy for Me” feature, it can shop other online retailers and complete purchases on a user’s behalf. This level of AI autonomy may raise questions around privacy and control, given broader concerns about AI acting independently on behalf of users.
The launch follows Amazon’s recent introduction of “Amazon Now,” a 30-minute delivery service rolling out across dozens of U.S. cities, and a separate AI feature that generates real-time conversational audio responses to product questions — signaling a continued push to embed AI throughout the shopping experience.
