Microsoft is retiring Together Mode from its Teams video conferencing platform in 2026, removing the feature in favor of a streamlined interface with fewer options and less complexity.
Together Mode was introduced during the pandemic as a way to simulate the feeling of shared physical presence during remote meetings. Using AI, the feature cropped out participants’ heads and shoulders and placed them into a shared virtual environment — such as a conference room setting — alongside other meeting attendees. It also included interactive elements like tapping co-workers on the shoulder or exchanging virtual high fives, as well as custom scenes and seat assignments.
The rollout of changes is gradual. As updates reach users, the Together Mode toggle will disappear from the view menu, and Together-specific features — including scenes and seat assignments — will be removed along with it.
Microsoft cited several reasons for the decision. The company said it wants to reduce fragmentation across its various platforms, simplify the interface to require less clicking and cause less confusion, and refocus engineering efforts on improving video quality, stability, and overall performance.
For users who relied on Together Mode to minimize visual distractions during calls, the removal may require an adjustment. The feature, while sometimes described as gimmicky, did serve a functional purpose in limiting background clutter by placing all participants in a unified visual space. Microsoft’s stated focus on performance and stability suggests the company is prioritizing core video functionality over immersive or novelty-driven features going forward.
