Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced during the company’s annual shareholder meeting that the production version of the long-awaited second-generation Roadster supercar will be unveiled on April 1, 2026. This announcement marks a significant delay from Musk’s initial projection nearly nine years ago. Musk stated that choosing April Fools’ Day provides him with ‘some deniability’ in case of further delays, noting, ‘Like, I could say I was just kidding.’ The event has been highly anticipated, with Musk teasing a reveal by the end of this year just a week prior. He emphasized that the new Roadster will differ significantly from its previous iterations and hinted at an exciting demo, potentially involving SpaceX-built thrusters.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the Roadster 2, Musk indicated that production is not expected to commence until 12 to 18 months post-reveal. Shareholders inquired about the involvement of ‘Founders Series’ customers, who had pre-ordered special versions of the car in 2017 for $250,000, in the upcoming event.
