OpenAI has integrated Codex into the ChatGPT mobile app, allowing users to monitor and manage their development workflows from iOS and Android devices. The update, announced Thursday, May 14, 2026, is currently in preview and available to all plans.
The new mobile functionality gives users visibility into their Codex live environments across any device where the tool is running. According to OpenAI, the update goes beyond simple remote task control. “From your phone, you can work across all of your threads, review outputs, approve commands, change models, or start something new,” the company said in a statement.
The mobile release follows a series of recent Codex expansions. Last month, OpenAI added background-running capability in desktop environments, enabling the tool to handle tasks autonomously. Earlier this month, the company introduced a Chrome extension allowing Codex to operate within live browser sessions.
The updates come amid ongoing competition between OpenAI and Anthropic over agentic coding tools. In February 2026, Anthropic released a similar feature called Remote Control, which lets users remotely monitor Claude Code’s activity. Over the past year, Claude Code has grown in popularity among businesses and tech professionals, though both tools remain widely used.
The pace of feature releases from both companies suggests the race to establish the dominant agentic coding tool is intensifying, with mobile access now becoming part of that competition.
