Perplexity has made its Personal Computer app available to all Mac users as of May 7, 2026, removing the waitlist and subscription requirement that had previously limited access since the product’s introduction last month.
Personal Computer is an expansion of Perplexity’s cloud-based AI agent product, Perplexity Computer. Where the original operates in the cloud, Personal Computer runs on the user’s own device, giving AI agents access to local files, native Mac applications, web browsing, and over 400 connectors. It is designed to handle multi-step personal workflows by combining local and web-based resources within what Perplexity describes as a secure development environment on its servers.
The app can also be paired with Perplexity’s Comet web browser to operate web-based tools without requiring direct connectors. For users running it on an always-on device such as a Mac Mini, the app supports remote access via iPhone, allowing users to initiate tasks or approve requests from their phone.
Perplexity says the tool is suited for tasks like working across spreadsheets, documents, and multi-file projects — for example, comparing files from different apps or pulling notes from one application to draft content in another.
The company positioned Personal Computer as a response to growing demand for local AI agents, a category it says has been popularized by OpenClaw. Perplexity claims its approach offers a safer computing environment compared to OpenClaw, which it notes presented security risks due to elevated permissions.
Following the general availability launch, Perplexity says it will deprecate its older Mac app in the coming weeks. The new app is available as a direct download only and is not listed in the Mac App Store.
