The GSM Association (GSMA) has unveiled the RCS Universal Profile 4.0 standard, which could pave the way for seamless video call integration between iPhone and Android users. The new Messaging‑Initiated Video Calls (MIVC) feature aims to enable a continuous conversation experience, allowing group members to join ongoing video calls they initially missed.
The MIVC functionality also synchronizes video call logs within the chat timeline, offering the first natively supported, interoperable video call experience across various devices and networks. However, both Apple and Google have not yet confirmed their support for this feature, and the timeline for its integration into messaging apps remains uncertain.
In addition to the video call capabilities, RCS Universal Profile 4.0 introduces new text formatting options, allowing users to incorporate styles like bold, italics, and strikethrough in their messages. The updated standard also enables the sharing of higher-quality audio, video, and images.
